 Critic Tradition-Queer Theory

“Sky“ was transparent to his housemates on how hygienic he is. He uses moisturizer on his face, lotion for feet, powder for his body, etc. Things that would make him feel clean. Meanwhile, his housemate “Mae” replies most of the instances, “Bakla ka kasi!” He said, “‘Yung mga ganiyang tao, salot ‘yan sa lipunan.”

This concept proposes rethinking what's considered normal and abnormal and rethinking normativity and power. Rethinking on what society has told what is “normal” and about the power of dynamics that come along with norms. It tackles about sex and gender on how sexuality are socially constructed. Resisting on what’s “normal.”

Teresa de Lauretis coined the term "queer theory" it was first made mention at a working conference on lesbians and gays sexuality in 1990.

Queer Theory debunks common misconceptions:

Sex and Gender

Sexuality identity is fixed and static—born with. Sexuality is fluid, it changes over time, people can be divided into normal and abnormal based on sexual practices or preferences, what’s considered acceptable. Sex and gender are not even binary, people don’t fit in identity categories.

Performativity

Gender is not what we are, gender is what we do. There is no authentic performance of gender.

Heteronormativity

It is the natural form of attraction or relationship between man and woman. Most people fall into heteronormative mindset. When somebody asks the girl, “do you have a boyfriend?” directly as it is while it can be “are you in a relationship?”

Identity Politics

Fighting rights based on certain individuals. Same-sex marriage, fighting its rights of the diversity of sexuality. Though heterosexual can also be oppressed in different ways then queer can also be privileged in different ways.

If it doesn’t fit in those characteristics then automatically falling outside of the norm or outside of privileged identity.

This should be also considered the age, class, ethnicity, religion and nationality. If it only focuses in one aspect, it neglects the others.

Queer Theory reconstructs the idea of the status quo, reclaiming what is usually rejected, an advocacy for the most marginalized society.
